Conte continues to stall on new Spurs contract

Antonio Conte continues to delay committing to a future contract with Spurs. Last year, the Italian coach only signed an 18-month contract when he arrived at the club. His current contract expires at the end of June. The Spurs have the option to extend the coach’s stay. However, this is a short-term solution.

The Spurs hierarchy obviously wants Conte to stay and stay for the long haul. However, Conte has not yet reached a new agreement. The Mail reports that Spurs have increased their offer to help persuade their manager to stay in charge. However, the supposed annual increase of $1.2 million has not made Conte budge.

Contract negotiations between Conte and Spurs Stall

Talks between Conte and club president Daniel Levy have been ongoing for months. This includes during the World Cup where Spurs, like other teams, have had a break from their busy schedules. However, these talks have not materialized any real contractual progress.

Conte currently receives about $18.2 million per year to manage the Spurs. The Athletic recently reported that the coach would like to see his salary increased to about $24 million a year to stay in the job. However, it seems that money is not the only factor in Conte’s decision.

Conte is used to winning titles

Ambition is clearly important to Conte. He wants to win trophies. The Italian has previously won major titles during his spells at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan. Although his time with Tottenham has been short so far, his team has yet to come close to a major trophy.

The January signings could ultimately be an important element for Conte to commit to a new contract. The coach has made it clear that he wants reinforcements as soon as possible. Spurs have a solid core group at the club, but some high-profile signings next month could take the team back to where Conte is used to.
