Pep Guardiola says Champions League win completes City stay

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has claimed that his time at the club would not be complete without Champions League glory. The Spaniard has been in Manchester since 2016. There, he has essentially won every other major trophie possible. This includes racking up a significant nine cups in total in six full seasons in charge.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Guardiola spoke about the importance of winning the Champions League.

“It’s not the only one but I recognize that it’s the trophy we want,” said the coach. “My term here won’t be complete if we don’t win it, but it’s not the only reason I extended my contract, absolutely not.”

“I will do everything in this time that we have together and I will try but I would say the same, we have tried before. It is the trophy that we do not have and we will try to do it”.

Pep Guardiola was left out of the Champions League in 2021

After three consecutive defeats at the quarter-final stage, City finally reached the Champions League final in 2021. However, Premier League rivals Chelsea beat Pep’s team 1-0 in Portugal. City were knocked out of the semi-finals last season against eventual winners Real Madrid.

Guardiola signed a new contract extension last month as he hopes to give City glory in the Champions League. He also spoke about his relationship with the City board and how it influenced his decision to stay at the club.

“It’s hard for me to turn them down because of the trust they have in more and in our staff and how they want us to do the best we can,” Guardiola said. “I don’t have enough words to express my gratitude to this club, to Khaldoon [Al Mubarak]to Ferran [Soriano] and everyone at the club for having me here”.

Guardiola has experience lifting the cup

While Guardiola has yet to bring Champions League triumph to the city, he has won the trophy before. The Spaniard garnered two European titles during his time as Barcelona coach in 2009 and 2011.

City and their manager continue their quest for a Champions League trophy when they take on RB Leipzig in the round of 16 on February 22.
