Steve Nicol urges Jurgen Klopp to sign Memphis Depay

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has urged Jurgen Klopp to sign Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay. The Dutch international joined the Blaugrana from Lyon on a free transfer during the summer 2021 window.

Depay enjoyed a decent debut season at Camp Nou, registering 12 goals and two assists. However, Barcelona signed Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha during the summer window, which has pushed Depay down the pecking order.

The 28-year-old attacker has managed to feature in just two league games this season. His contract at the Camp Nou will expire at the end of this season. The Blaugrana could look to charge for him in January instead of letting him leave for free next summer.

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol believes Barcelona’s Memphis Depay will be a good signing for the Reds.

Speaking to the media, he said (h/t Sportskeeda): “I mean, why not. The boy has the ability. If he is Barcelona, given the situation he finds himself in financially, maybe he could work. If Liverpool had Depay on the bench to come in, that wouldn’t be a bad thing.”

“Considering how difficult it always seems to get these things to work, it probably seems unlikely. But as far as it being a good idea (signing Depay), then absolutely.”

Memphis Depay enjoyed a decent performance for the Dutch national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The 28-year-old attacker made five appearances in Qatar, scoring one goal. He could be a decent option off the bench for the Reds.

However, Depay struggled during his earlier Premier League spell with Manchester United. The Dutch international spent a season and a half at Old Trafford between 2015 and 2017. He played 33 Premier League games for the Red Devils, scoring just two goals. Whether the Dutchman will be able to succeed in the English top flight remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray have also shown interest in signing Memphis Depay in recent weeks. Erden Timur is reportedly in contact with Depay’s agents to lure him to Istanbul.
