Erik ten Hag makes Cody Gakpo a suprise promise as transfer pursuit heats up – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has promised PSV Eindhoven a prominent role in his team if it chooses a move from Old Trafford to other destinations.

On top of this, Gakpo is in line to inherit Cristiano Ronaldo’s number seven shirt when it arrives.

The Mirror reports that Ten Hag has told the striker that he sees him as the perfect heir to the late Ronaldo who left a few weeks ago.

United’s interest in Gakpo dates back to the summer when a move never materialized.

Gakpo came close to joining the 20-time English champions, but when a decision was made Ten Hag opted to spend the money on his former Ajax player Antony instead of the Dutchman.

Since then, numerous reports have indicated that United continue to compete for his services, an interest that has been bolstered by the player’s brilliant performances at the World Cup.

Gakpo finished the tournament with three goals, scoring the first goal in all three of the Netherlands’ group stage matches.

Ten Hag relies on one factor to beat the Gakpo firm’s rivals: his personal relationship with the player.

The Mirror reports: “Erik ten Hag is confident that his relationship with Cody Gakpo will give Manchester United a decisive advantage in the fight for the in-demand striker from PSV Eindhoven.

“Ten Hag worked with Gakpo when he was in charge of PSV’s academy more than a decade ago, and he maintained a friendship with the player and his family throughout his emergence as one of the best players in the Eredivisie.”

The Mirror exclusively adds: “The bond that Ten Hag has created with Gakpo could be pivotal, as are the reassurances the Dutch international is seeking regarding his role in the team.”

To sign Gakpo, the Red Devils will have to avoid stiff competition from Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Leeds United.
