The biggest problem plaguing Manchester United at the moment is their financial situation after their exorbitant summer splurge under new manager Erik ten Hag.
As previously reported, United’s current debt to clubs from transfer fees is over £306m. And that has meant that United’s transfer business could be hampered.
The initial plan was for the club to direct all its efforts to get a right-back to reduce the excessive dependence on Diogo Dalot.
Depay, the perfect short-term solution
But Cristiano Ronaldo’s incendiary interview and subsequent departure have meant that the club’s plans to sign a striker have had to be accelerated.
However, the World Cup has thrown a monkey wrench in the works due to the great performances put in by United’s goals.
And that has led clubs to increase their valuations to such an extent that it could prove too difficult a bridge for United to cross in January.

The most suitable option for United would be Barcelona’s relatively cheap Memphis Depay. He came close to mutually agreeing to a free start in the summer.
But now the Catalan giants await a transfer fee with Galatasaray the only club to have expressed an interest in paying for the Dutch international.
Will United will opt for Depay
In terms of price, Depay is the best fit and has shown during his post-United career that he can get the job done when called upon.
He was a huge success at Olympique de Lyon and even in his debut season with Barcelona and has proven himself during his time with the national team.
Despite his injury history and advancing age, Depay can be a quality stopgap.
But the former United star has a point to prove to the club and that may motivate him to do even better than he did in his first spell.
