Karius on his relationship with Klopp and the end to his Liverpool career

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has insisted there is “no bad blood” between him and Jurgen Klopp.

The German coach signed the goalkeeper from Mainz in 2016, but after making two terrible mistakes during the Reds’ Champions League final loss to Real Madrid in 2018, he never played competitively for the club again.

He is now looking to jumpstart his career with Eddie Howe at Newcastle, but he started the campaign as the second choice behind Nick Pope and has yet to feature for the Magpies competitively.

He told ESPN: “My time at Liverpool was over and I was looking to move on. [in 2021]but then there were difficulties in making a transfer.

“I found myself in a situation where I had to stay at Liverpool, knowing I wouldn’t get my chance.

“It was openly discussed with the manager. There is no bad blood, but knowing the situation from the beginning was difficult. Last season, when you were left out of the call for the day, you lost a bit of the feeling you have when you win, lose and travel with the team.

“You just miss him. So it’s not easy to stay positive and keep working because you obviously know you’re not going to get involved. I learned a lot from that and did my best in training and stayed positive mentally.

“I have played more than 200 matches in the first division and national teams, so I knew my qualities. He knew he had a lot to offer. I’m just turning 30 and that’s not an age for a goalkeeper, but of course last season was difficult.”

The German has ensured that being reminded of his performance in the Ukrainian capital is ‘tiring’ and he is aware that those mistakes cost him his career at Anfield.

“That [the mistakes] it made me go to another club,” Karius said as he reflected on his mistakes. “Maybe it was a move that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

“I’ve said all about this [the 2018 Champions League final]. It’s exhausting for me to keep talking about it, it’s football and things happen”.

Klopp came out and signed Alisson Becker for £67m from Roma after our loss to the La Liga giants in 2018 and what a signing that has been.

The Brazilian has won every major trophie possible on Merseyside and is widely recognized as the best goalkeeper in the world. We certainly feel lucky to have him between the sticks!
