Liverpool could be hit with huge transfer blow as journalist drops money claim: ‘It doesn’t add up’

Dean Jones has claimed that Liverpool’s reported interest in Enzo Fernández and Jude Bellingham “doesn’t add up”, suggesting that the club does not possess the financial capabilities to land both talents this summer.

The Merseysiders are said to have identified the Englishman as their main target in 2023, although they have also been consistently linked to signing Benfica in 2022.

“The talk about Enzo Fernández and a pre-contract at Liverpool doesn’t exactly fit what I’ve discovered so far,” the reporter told Give Me Sport.

“It looks like Liverpool would be willing to match or beat any personal offer they get next, but at the end of the day, they still have a huge buyout clause that needs to be met of over £100m.

“This is at the same time that we also hear that they want Bellingham, which is also over that number. It doesn’t add up, Liverpool don’t have that much money to spend on them.

“Perhaps Liverpool fear that Bellingham is more likely to end up at Man City, who are increasingly confident they can do it.”

The England international has been in amazing form for club and country, recording contributions of 12 goals in 22 games (in all competitions) for Borussia Dortmund before helping guide the Three Lions to the quarter-finals of the world Cup.

There’s no question that just one of the aforementioned two joining the club in the summer along with one or two more middle-of-the-park additions would still represent phenomenal business.

The signing of both would, of course, more than secure the future of our midfield department for at least the next decade or so.

Initial cost aside, significant as it undoubtedly is, the value of such an eventuality, if it is feasible, simply cannot be ignored.

Interestingly, there has already been some wrangling over the Jones point, with football finance expert Mo Chatra explaining how we COULD theoretically afford both deals.
