Super League series coming to Apple TV+ about the ‘war for soccer’

Apple TV+ has announced a new documentary series on the European Super League. “Super League: The War for Football” premieres on the streaming service starting January 13, 2023. The four-part series documents the debacle surrounding the league’s failed formation in April 2021.

As well as explaining the now infamous situation, the series features league presidents, club owners and even the organizers at the heart of the Super League. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jeff Zimbalist is the director. Last Dance producer Connor Schell is also on the staff of this documentary.

Apple TV+ documentary leads into the future of the European Super League

The Super League was a proposed soccer competition featuring the best teams in Europe. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Juventus, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan and Inter Milan initially agreed to join the league. However, fans across the continent were furious, especially in England. Quickly, the clubs withdrew from the plans.

Although the league failed, the organizers kept hope alive. Bernd Reichart, an executive of the European Super League (ESL), stated that there are reflections on a new format in the league. “There is a reassessment. There is a clearly stated move towards an open format and that permanent membership is off the table,” Reichart said. “We want to see whether or not there is a broader consensus on the problems facing European football.”

There are still three teams in plans

Barça, Real Madrid and Juventus have not officially withdrawn from the plans either. In fact, the ESL organizers are currently in a legal battle with UEFA regarding the formation. While the official ruling on the case won’t come until spring, there will be big news on Thursday. A 50-page report on the case is scheduled to be published. It could influence any final verdict.

The fascinating story, coupled with proven filmmakers, should make for a fantastic watch. Users can access Apple TV+ on Apple devices, Apple TV, Mac, smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony, VIZIO, TCL and others, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV. Plans for the streaming service start at $6.99 per month.
