Friday roundup: Juve’s Brazilian trio eliminated while Argentines progress

While everyone was expecting a thrilling semi-final matchup between arch-rivals Brazil and Argentina, only one made it past the World Cup quarter-finals on what turned out to be a dramatic Friday in Doha.

Between the two South American colossi, Juventus had five representatives, and at the end of the day, it was agony for some and joy for others.

In the afternoon, the Seleção butted heads against resilient Croatia, with Danilo starting at left-back as Alex Sandro was not quite fit.

The Juventus vice-captain had a difficult start to the match, earning himself a booking, but regained his composure as the game wore on.

Following Neymar’s goal in the 105th minute, Sandro came onto the pitch for Militao, sending Danilo back to his natural position at right-back.

Unfortunately for the duo, the Croats caught them on a late counter-attack to take the game to penalties, which saw the Europeans emerge victorious once again, sending both Juve full-backs home, along with Gleison Bremer, who he was an unused substitute.

On the other hand, the penalty shootout was much kinder to Leandro Paredes and Ángel Di María, although neither was selected for the five kicks from the starting point after the exciting 2-2 draw between the Albiceleste and the Netherlands.

The midfielder entered the pitch midway through the second half and caused a stir by shooting the ball towards the Dutch bench, resulting in a huge melee in what was already a tense and dramatic affair.

For his part, the winger had to wait until the 112th minute to take part in the action.
