Telemundo’s Sammy Sadovnik reveals the secret to gol calls

World Soccer Talk had the opportunity to interview Telemundo World Cup commentator Sammy Sadovnik. Sadovnik is currently stationed in Doha with the rest of Telemundo’s on-air talent.

Like most play-by-play voices in Qatar, the World Cup is the busiest schedule possible. For example, Sadovnik announced games almost every day. The two-day break between the round of 16 and the quarterfinals was the first time he had been free since he arrived in Qatar. While he was there, he witnessed a number of great moments.

Sadovnik is one of the Spanish-speaking announcers who uses the long shouts of ‘goooool’ when a team scores. For reference, he once chanted that famous word for 17 consecutive seconds after a goal. However, duration is one thing. It is the emotion that truly speaks through his voice.

Sadovnik called that game on Telemundo. In addition, he made the round of 16 clash. He was the voice of Ivan PeriÅ¡ić’s header that equalized the game in the second half.

In the near future, he is in the squad for a quarterfinal tie between Brazil and Croatia, as well as the match for third place in the tournament.

Interview with Sammy Sadovnik

In this exclusive World Soccer Talk interview, Sammy Sadovnik discusses the mental and physical preparations required to call matches. With such a high number of games in such a short amount of time, there is certainly wear and tear on the vocal cords.

Beyond that, however, is the emotion involved in the calls. Sadovnik sees himself as a way to bring the excitement of the stadium to the millions of viewing households across the United States. Telemundo and other Spanish-language stations do it brilliantly. The exchange of energy between the commentary team provides insight into the potentially frenetic nature of the game as it happens.

Even if you don’t speak Spanish, watching Telemundo and Sadovnik’s commentary allows viewers to fully understand what the World Cup means.
