Barcelona director gives update on Frenkie de Jong transfer

Frenkie de Jong has been linked with a transfer away from Barcelona. The Dutch international is among the most talented midfielders of his generation.

He arrived at Barcelona for 75 million euros from Ajax in the 2019 summer transfer window. De Jong has played 157 games (in all competitions) for the Blaugrana so far, registering 15 goals and 19 assists. He helped the Blaugrana win the 2020-21 Copa del Rey and also won the Premi Barça Jugadores (Barça Players Award) in 2020-21.

Barcelona CEO Jordi Cruyff has revealed that the time to sell Frenkie de Jong is over.

Speaking to SPORT, he said: “Frenkie de Jong is not for sale. He is a key player for us, so that time is over. He is here and he is important to us. In the end last summer after the Fair Play discussions he stayed here and Frenkie is very loved at Barça”.

Frenkie de Jong was linked with a transfer away from Barcelona during the summer window. The Dutch international is among the highest paid players at the Camp Nou. Barcelona wanted to sell it to balance their accounts.

They even accepted a transfer offer from Manchester United to sell Frenkie de Jong. However, De Jong was reluctant to leave and blocked his departure from the club.

The Dutch international has been among Barcelona’s best players this season. He has played 13 La Liga games so far, registering two goals and one assist.

De Jong and Messi were Barcelona teammates between 2019 and 2021. The pair were part of the Blaugrana team that won the Copa del Rey in 2020-21.
