Dutch international Matthijs de Ligt has revealed why his transfer to Chelsea never materialized before joining Bayern Munich last summer.

Speaking to the media, he said: “It’s incredible, I’m having a great time at Bayern. I already feel at home. Chelsea interest last summer? I did not speak to them. He wasn’t close to me, but maybe he was with the clubs. I didn’t talk to Chelsea]this summer.

Chelsea lost defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen for free last summer. Then manager Thomas Tuchel was interested in bolstering his back line before the start of the current season. Matthijs de Ligt was among the main transfer targets of him in that regard. However, the transfer did not materialize and he eventually signed Wesley Fofana from Leicester City and Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.
