Luis Suarez Hits Out at FIFA After Uruguay FIFA World Cup Elimination

Luis Suárez hit out at FIFA after Uruguay withdrew from the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite a 2-0 win over Ghana in a Group H match.

Uruguay entered the game against Ghana with one point from two Group H games. It was a game that Luis Suárez and company had to win. and sealed a 2-0 victory over the African nation.

But South Korea’s 2-1 win over Portugal in another Group H match that started at the same time denied Uruguay a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup round of 16. Uruguay would have qualified for the knockout stages had they defeated Ghana by three goals.

When the Uruguay vs. Ghana match went into injury time, the match between Portugal and South Korea was over. Uruguay desperately searched for a third goal that would take them to second place in Group H, but could not find it. Uruguay also claimed a stoppage-time penalty for a tackle on Edinson Cavani inside the Ghana penalty area.

Speaking to Teledoce, Luis Suárez insisted that it should have been a penalty for Uruguay for a tackle on Cavani in stoppage time of the game.

“I see a penalty for Cavani because he cuts off his defender and puts his body in front of him. Darwin’s is also very clear,” said Luis Suárez.

“They are not excuses, but in this World Cup incredible penalties are being given. And there is the committee of referees and FIFA, and they have to try to explain themselves better, at least,” added Suárez.

Luis Suárez had been a starter in the Uruguay game and played with his team until minute 66 when Cavani replaced him. Suárez could only watch from the bench as Uruguay looked for a third goal that would take them to the next stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In Group H, Portugal and South Korea have qualified for the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Portugal topped Group H with six points. South Korea, for its part, has four points, the same as Uruguay. But South Korea ranked second in fair games, having received fewer yellow cards than Uruguay.
