Video: Edinson Cavani punches VAR monitor in World Cup rage after Uruguay crash out

Edinson Cavani could not contain his anger after Uruguay were knocked out of the World Cup in what was a controversial game after he was not awarded a late penalty against Ghana.

As his team left the pitch in regulation time, Edinson Cavani vented his frustration on the pitchside VAR monitor.

Cavani came on from the bench in place of former Liverpool striker Luis Suárez in the 65th minute, but was unable to help his team score the third goal and was one of several players who surrounded the referee after the game.

However, the full force of Cavani’s anger was directed at the VAR screen, which the former United striker smashed to the ground as he sped past on his way to the dressing room.

And Cavani’s behavior was criticized by pundits Ian Wright and Joe Cole after the match. While on pundit duties on ITV, commenting on the incident, Ian Wright called the veteran striker a “horrible fellow”. While Joe Cole also criticized his behavior saying:

It’s terrible behavior. You feel frustrated but you have to keep your composure.

“You have a responsibility, the world is watching, the children are watching, there were six players around the referee, that doesn’t look good.”
