Video: Uruguay players ‘almost assault’ the referee after full-time whistle in chaotic scenes

Uruguay was knocked out of the World Cup despite defeating Ghana 2-0. The players were absolutely furious about harassing the referee full time who was forced to be escorted down the tunnel.

After two nights of pure drama, Group H’s conclusion nearly topped it all; Uruguay needed to win to stay in the tournament, while Ghana just needed to avoid defeat.

Ghana won an early penalty, but Andre Ayew failed to score. Uruguay then took control of the game with two quick goals from Giorgian De Arrascaeta.

And it looked like the South Americans would progress until South Korea scored a stoppage-time winner against Portugal to turn the group dynamic around. Uruguay now needed to score another goal to advance on goal difference.

There were a couple of controversial decisions made by the referee. Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez was brought down inside the Ghana box by Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey in the 57th minute. The German referee who had indicated play to continue was instructed by VAR to review his original decision on the pitchside monitor, but Siebert he refused to reverse his decision.

And later, Edinson Cavani’s strong penalty appeal, which if converted would have sent Uruguay to the round of 16 at the expense of South Korea, was denied. However, the referee was not asked to review the VAR screen at the side of the pitch, prompting mass protests at the final whistle.

At the final whistle, several Uruguayan players confronted the referee. Cavani was certainly reserved, as were some others, as Uruguay took their anger out on whoever was around. The German referee was escorted down.

They were absolutely chaotic scenes, and it’s fair to say that Ghana vs Uruguay has earned a reputation for never lacking in drama.
