USWNT players receive $380k each after USMNT beat Iran

The United States women’s national team received a big monetary boost following the men’s victory against Iran on Tuesday. Due to a prior agreement, each USWNT player will now receive $380,000 after the men’s big game.

The unions of both US teams agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement in May. Prior to the deal, the two teams were essentially competing for the resources of the United States Soccer Federation. However, under the new terms, the men’s and women’s teams are working together to benefit both unions.

Players on both sides happy with the deal

The USMNT and Nashville SC defender Walker Zimmerman previously spoke about the deal. “I’m really excited to start this partnership almost over again, like a clean slate. We are working together,” Zimmerman said.

“We have accomplished a lot together with this revolutionary CBA, and we are certainly [going to] be cheering like crazy, because that’s exactly what this CBA is. It’s the same. We will be your biggest fans. I am sure they will also be our biggest fans.”

Midge Purce, a USWNT forward and union committee member, was also delighted with the deal. “I think what this CBA does is finally create that ‘One Nation.’ A team.’ And I think it really brought us together under that ideology that we’ve been pursuing for a long time,” Purce said.

USMNT and USWNT split the World Cup prize money

Under the new agreement, 90% of the World Cup prize money awarded to the USSF will be split equally between the USMNT team and the 2023 USWNT World Cup team.

If the size of the Women’s World Cup rosters is expanded to 26 players, just like the men’s teams, each player would receive $380,769 in prize money. FIFA will reportedly award around $440 million to the 32 countries participating in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The sport’s world governing body previously shelled out $30 million to the 2019 Women’s World Cup nations.
