The 500 Hz sensor found inside this year’s World Cup ball was used by Adidas to verify that Cristiano Ronaldo did not touch the ball. “Using Connected Ball technology housed in the Adidas Al Rihla Official Match Ball, we can conclusively demonstrate that Cristiano Ronaldo had no contact with the ball for the first goal of the game,” an Adidas statement read.
“As shown by the lack of a ‘heartbeat’ from our measurements and the accompanying image, no external force could be detected on the ball. “We can be extremely accurate in our analysis thanks to the 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball.”
Bruno Fernandes acknowledged in his post-match interview on Monday night that he mistakenly believed Cristiano Ronaldo had equaled Eusebio’s record of nine World Cup goals when he jumped to find his cross.
He said: “I celebrated as if Cristiano had scored. In my perspective, he seemed to have touched the ball. He intended to cross the ball for him. Regardless of the scorer, we are happy with the victory. The most important thing is that we achieved our goal of going to the next round.”
