Liverpool set for talks with representatives of 17-assist World Cup gem once out of the competition – report

Liverpool could be ready to add more quality to their forward line as soon as the January window.

Marco Timmer reported planned talks between the Reds and PSV’s Cody Gakpo once the Netherlands are out of the World Cup.

“Liverpool will be among the clubs keeping a close eye on the PSV Eindhoven man in Qatar,” David Comerford wrote for Liverpool.com.

“On Friday, Voetbal International journalist Marco Timmer reported that the Reds plan to hold talks with their representatives once their participation in the competition concludes, along with other European heavyweights such as Real Madrid, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

“It’s not a ‘foregone conclusion’ that he will leave the Eredivisie side in January, but PSV are ready to listen to offers of €50m (£43.3m) or more.”

Valued at £43.3m, this is significantly lower than the £80m quoted by Ronald de Boer and would therefore prove much more tempting for the Merseysiders, assuming the tournament does not trigger the asking price.

The left winger has enjoyed a productive campaign at domestic level, registering 13 goals and 17 assists in all competitions.

Does that leave us enough room to maneuver in the market when it comes to midfield additions?

That question can only be answered by FSG. It’s true that the departure of Julian Ward will force a change in philosophy at the club (including the way we handle transfers), although it’s unclear whether it will be the Americans or our next potential owners who will drive that evolution.

With the lack of dead wood available compared to other seasons to finance purchases in the next two windows, it is clear that we will have a difficult time fully committing to the sustainability policy that has guided us thus far.
