8.9 million watched Argentina-Mexico on Telemundo Deportes

It was the game that Telemundo Deportes executives were most looking forward to for the 2022 World Cup. Argentina against Mexico. And it did not disappoint. So much so that 8.9 million tuned in via Telemundo, Peacock and the Telemundo streaming app to watch Argentina’s incredible 2-0 victory.

The duel between Argentina and Mexico was a dream for Telemundo executives. The most popular team from North America against the team with Messi from South America. More than that, the game on FOX Sports was placed on FS1 instead of FOX due to scheduling conflicts.

Argentina-Mexico breaks records in the United States

Argentina against Mexico broke three records in the United States:

It is unknown how many of the viewers were English speakers, but that must have been a factor as well.

Saturday’s Argentina-Mexico match is the first World Cup match to surpass two million viewers with an Average Audience Per Minute (AMA) of 2.08 million viewers on the Peacock and Telemundo broadcast platforms and surpassing the previous record established by the match Mexico vs. Poland on Tuesday (1.35 million).

The success of the broadcast has propelled Peacock to the #1 spot on the App Store for free iOS apps every day since the tournament began, with the Telemundo Deportes app often making it into the Top 5.

World Cup viewership has increased

Over seven days, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 averages a total audience of 2.6 million viewers across 24 matches, 24% more than the 2018 tournament (2.1 million), which had place in Russia in the summer.

During the Argentina-Mexico match window (1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET), Telemundo ranked as the No. 1 network overall, regardless of language, in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, and San Francisco, and number 1 in Spanish.
