Exclusive: Barcelona had strong interest in Spain World Cup star but chose this transfer instead

Barcelona opted to sign Ferran Torres over Dani Olmo despite having strong transfer interest in the star from RB Leipzig and Spain in 2021.

The 24-year-old is now having an impressive World Cup with the Spanish team, and Fabrizio Romano has discussed his situation in his exclusive Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside’s Substack.

Romano has revealed that Barca have been one of Olmo’s biggest fans of late, but opted to sign Torres while he was at Manchester City.

Like Olmo, Torres is also a key part of Luis Enrique’s Spain squad in Qatar this winter, and he has had his moments at the Camp Nou, although he may not have been as consistent as many expected.

Olmo certainly looks like someone to watch, and Romano admits he could see the Leipzig forward as a good signing for a Premier League club one day.

“Dani Olmo is impressing with Spain in the World Cup and I can reveal that there was great interest from Barcelona a year ago, in 2021; but then they invested 55 million euros in Ferran Torres, so nothing happened,” Romano said.

“I think Olmo is a great talent and could also be great for the Premier League; but there is nothing imminent or near as of today.”
