Questions remain for Gareth Southgate’s England

After destroying Iran in the first match, England fell well below the high bar they had set for themselves at this World Cup. A dogged performance by the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) thwarted England’s attacking riches.

England a shadow of the first match

For most of the game England were very pedestrian. There was plenty of build up but England were unable to break through the final third with any clear chances.

Southgate, known for his loyalty, made no changes to the squad that started the game against Iran. The problem now is that Southgate’s loyalty is predictable. The US midfield effectively neutralized Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka, who excelled from game one.

Raheem Sterling impressed in the game against Iran, but he played more like he has for Chelsea in today’s game. By contrast, Christian Pulisic, who has also struggled with form at Chelsea, was causing all sorts of problems for the England defence.

A junior USMNT displayed athletic packs.

They have only scored one goal after the two games and will need to get past Iran to advance in the tournament. Berhalter’s men should be very confident in the result against England.

Meanwhile, the England players should be kicking themselves for missing out on booking a place in the next round. Now they have to get a positive result against Wales to confirm their place in the round of 16.

What must change for England?

It’s becoming a familiar refrain, will Southgate continue to trust the core group of players?

It was frustrating to see Phil Foden and Callum Wilson on the bench. Especially after Harry Kane took a hit against Iran. Kane was cleared after a scan, but it’s hard to see why he started if he’s still on the mend.

As England prepare for Wales, Southgate need to rely on those who are hungry to play. Specifically, Callum Wilson, James Maddison, Phil Foden, and Trent Alexander-Arnold should start.

Southgate cares about cohesion and philosophy, but these are the best professionals. If they’re not good enough to do the job, why are they in Qatar?
