Liverpool have apparently been rocked by the news that Julian Ward has decided to leave the club this summer, so it appears the search for a replacement is well underway.
As reported by Andy Jones for The Athletic, one of those possible alternatives could be that of Christoph Freund, who currently works as the sporting director of the Austrian club RB Salzburg:
“The 45-year-old, like Edwards, is not looking for the spotlight and is happy to work behind the scenes. He was appointed sporting director in 2015 after previously working in other roles at the club and is known for managing key relationships within the club and with agents.

Liverpool would need to convince Freund that his is the perfect project for him. He has strong ties to Red Bull Salzburg and taking him out as a prize would be difficult, as Chelsea found out.’
The Austrian was touted as a potential Chelsea sporting director as new owner Todd Boehly took over the club and tried to bring about change at the top of his club, but talks broke down and a new contract was signed. with his current club.
The former player for several Austrian Bundesliga clubs already has a good track record of scouting with the likes of Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino tracking his arrival in Europe at age 45 – that’s ignoring Erling Haaland’s ‘discovery’ too .
The report went on to mention how we already have ‘positive relationships’ with the Red Bull group and therefore despite having more than three years left on his current contract, we may be able to move him away from Austria.
He’s just a possible name on the roster right now, but it sounds like Freund could be a great option for the Reds.
