FIFA opened a process against the Mexican Football Federation after racist chants from fans during the Mexico vs. Poland match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Mexico vs. Poland match ended in a 0-0 draw at Estadio 974 on Tuesday. Both teams are in Group C along with Argentina and Saudi Arabia. Mexico will face Argentina on November 27. Meanwhile, Mexico will face Saudi Arabia in their next 2022 FIFA World Cup match on November 26.
FIFA opens investigation into racist chants by Mexico fans
FIFA has launched an investigation against Mexico soccer, alleging that fans began chanting homophobic chants during the 2022 FIFA World Cup clash between Mexico and Poland on Tuesday.
Mexican fans insulted Polish striker Robert Lewandowski after he failed to convert his penalty kick against Guillermo Ochoa during the Mexico vs. Poland match.

In its official statement, FIFA stated (via Reuters): “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Mexican Football Association due to the chants of Mexican fans during the FIFA World Cup Mexico match. vs Poland played on November 22. The procedure was opened on the basis of article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code”.
Gay rights organizations have criticized Mexican fans in the past for their abusive insults. El Tri fans shout “eeeehhhhh… puto” (prostitute in English) to the opposing goalkeepers when they are about to execute goal kicks.
Mexico was fined during the 2018 World Cup by FIFA for the use of the slur. The Mexican Football Federation started a campaign in recent years to prevent fans from signing abusive chants.
Qatar bans Welsh fans from wearing rainbow caps at the 2022 FIFA World Cup
Qatar prevented Wales from wearing rainbow caps at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium during the Wales vs USA game in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The game ended 1-1 with Timothy Weah and Gareth Bale scoring for their respective teams.
The rainbow flag is used as a symbol of LGBTQ rights around the world. However, it is a controversial issue in Qatar as same-sex relationships are criminalized in the country.
FIFA is currently in talks with Qatar to find a solution. They reminded the hosts of the promises they made before the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
