Chelsea Not in a Position to Compete For Trophies, Admits Graham Potter

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has admitted his side are not in a position where they can compete for major trophies.

The Blues named Potter as their manager after a mixed start to the 22/23 season. Chelsea parted ways with Thomas Tuchel after he fell in a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in their Champions League opener.

Potter left Brighton & Hove Albion to join Chelsea and the Blues were unbeaten in their first nine games in all competitions under their new manager. However, Chelsea have now dropped to two defeats in their previous three games.

Their two defeats since Potter took charge of the club have been in the Premier League. Chelsea suffered a heavy 4–1 defeat at the hands of Potter’s former team Brighton in late October. The Stamford Bridge club then fell to a 1-0 loss to London rivals and Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has admitted his side are not in a position where they can compete for major trophies.

The west London side currently languish in seventh place in the Premier League points table and are far behind in the title race.

Speaking at a news conference, Potter said he has potentially joined one of the best clubs in the world.

However, he also confessed that Chelsea have not been in a position where they can compete for major trophies for the last three or four years.

“One of the reasons for coming here, one of many, was that it is a fantastic football club, potentially one of the best in the world, and one that can compete for any major trophy,” Potter said.

He added: “But I think we all know we’re not at that point now, and we haven’t been in two or three or four years. That’s the reality when you look at the league table and the points difference between the top two and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are now 13 points behind Arsenal in the Premier League. The Blues have 21 points from 13 games, while the Gunners have earned 34 points from 13 games.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will face Manchester City in the EFL Cup third round in their next game. Man City hosts Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium, with the match kicking off at 1:30am Indian Standard Time on Thursday.

Chelsea will then look to win again in the Premier League when they take on Newcastle United in the English top flight on November 12.
