Pep Lijnders has confirmed that Caoimhin Kelleher will start for Liverpool in Wednesday’s EFL Cup meeting with Derby County.
The Reds manager made it clear that it would be ‘a shame’ not to field the Irishman who will play his first game for the club since the Carabao Cup final at the end of February.
“Yes, Caoimh deserves it. If you take the last penalty in [in the final]it would be a shame if we dropped him now,” the Dutchman told reporters at his pre-match press conference, as reported by liverpoolfc.com.
The 23-year-old played a big part on that occasion and his actions rightly earned him a place on the goalkeeper’s wall at the AXA training center.

With minutes so few and far between for Kelleher, understandably given that we have arguably the leading goalkeeper in world football at the moment, cup competitions are so critical to giving players like him a chance to shine.
There is some level of expectation that the Republic of Ireland international will not be inclined to prolong his stay at Liverpool Football Club for much longer.
We would fully understand if that was really the case and if he looked elsewhere for first-team opportunities.
In the meantime, we hope the pitcher can enjoy another successful campaign in the cups with us and help hand out trophies once again.
