Manchester United midfielder Zidane Iqbal is one of the club’s brightest prospects and has the potential to become a leading figure in the middle of the park for his club for many years to come.
Last year, Iqbal made history, becoming the first British South Asian to play for United, and the first British South Asian to play in the Champions League when he played against Young Boys.
However, the youngster’s real breakout came during pre-season when he left fans raving with his incredible calm and pressure-resistant displays in midfield. In a team full of world superstars and big names, Iqbal shone the brightest on tour.
Speaking to GQ, Iqbal spoke about his intentions to break through in a United shirt and which current players motivate him and which he seeks to emulate.
The 19-year-old told GQ: “When I was young, my dad used to play a lot of Zinedine Zidane YouTube videos at home. Now, I admire Frenkie de Jong, I think he is a brilliant player. And Thiago from Liverpool.
“I know he’s playing for Liverpool, but you can still respect another person and how he plays, it’s beautiful to watch.”
Frenkie de Jong is a player that United chased all summer, but the transfer did not happen. Iqbal would have had a chance to play alongside the Barca man, and he could still do so if Erik ten Hag finally convinces him to join.
The academy graduate was asked about what keeps him steady on his path to becoming a soccer star. He named his home and heritage as the two factors that keep him in check above all else.
He impressively reiterated that he was looking to use his talent and opportunity to inspire people like himself and pave the way for more South Asian players to reach the highest level.
In particular, he pointed to his religion as an element that drives him to improve both on and off the court.
Iqbal praised his fellow seniors who he said he learns from every day. Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes earned the player’s praise for his willingness to always help him.
He named Lisandro MartÃnez as the most intense player in training and one who sets him on fire by example.
“Licha takes every training session like it’s her last,” he said.
“I’m learning things like giving 100 percent every day, with the right mindset and attitude.”
Hopefully Iqbal lives up to his billing and gets his chance this season. He is extremely capable and, as we saw during the preseason, he is willing to take any opportunity that comes his way with both hands.
