It’s fair to say that much of Liverpool’s midfield hopes rest largely on the technical brilliance of Thiago Alcantara.

The importance of the Spaniard to this beleaguered Reds team has not gone unnoticed by José Enrique, who tweeted his appreciation for his compatriot online.

It can be argued that the break provided by the upcoming World Cup in Qatar (for those not called up by their respective international teams) will be extremely valuable.

It will certainly give Jurgen Klopp and Pep Lijnders time to think of solutions to our lack of stability on the pitch.

Even assuming injuries subside in the second half of the campaign, there can be no guarantee that we will see clear improvements in performance and, more importantly, on a consistent basis.

Given the transformative impact the signing of Luis Diaz in the 2021/22 winter window had on our quest for a quadruple, we’d be surprised if Liverpool avoided seeking a similar boost with a suitable midfield target, should there is one available.

We can no longer rely on one man to hold the entire midfield operation together.
