Tonight saw the successful continuation of Erik ten Hag’s revolution at Manchester United. The Red Devils held on to a 1-0 lead at Old Trafford, narrowly escaping a draw thanks to David de Gea’s heroics and solid defence.
United’s only goal came from academy player-turned-first-team star Marcus Rashford.
Rashford found a delightful cross from Christian Eriksen to head in late in the first half. The goal marked a notable milestone in Rashford’s United career.
Rashford is now back in his prime and part of the 100 club at Manchester United.
The young centurion achieved the feat in 318 games under the watch of another centurion and Manchester United legend, Denis Law.
United got another win with a seemingly less than clinical performance up front. Keeping a clean sheet for the fifth time this season despite sustained pressure from the Hammers is a promising sign.
Ian Wright, in his PL Productions/Sky post-match analysis, praised Lisandro Martinez. Wright commented on the Argentine’s impact at United, saying:
“Martinez has brought a defensive quality back to Manchester United that I haven’t seen for a long time.”
“He is exactly what they need, no messing around, no frills.”
Wright also admitted that Martinez exceeded his expectations, confessing, “I didn’t think it was going to be as good as it has been.”
Closing out the Hammers and maintaining their lead puts the Red Devils within a point of the top four and a place in the Champions League. They also have a game to play against Spurs and Newcastle above them.
It may not have been a dominant performance, but United have a union.
The renewed passion and determination to win games they might have lost last season will be something all United fans will appreciate.
