Journalist Samuel Luckhurst has named the position that he feels is becoming a “growing problem” at Manchester United.
Manchester United faced West Ham on Sunday night and due to injuries to Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof, Erik ten Hag did not name the centre-backs on the bench, with Harry Maguire coming on as Lisandro Martinez’s partner.
Manchester Evening News reporter Luckhurst now believes the centre-back is becoming a growing problem for Manchester United, as seen in the tweet below.
Central defender is a growing problem for #mufc. They currently only have two senior options and Teden Mengi is currently the third option. Jones and Tuanzebe have been absent all season, while Maguire, Lindelof and Varane have been sacked. Thank goodness Martinez has been in form.

Calling it a growing problem is a long way off, but it’s hard to blame anyone for the situation that’s occurring. Manchester United certainly have an adequate number of defenders, but injury problems throughout the season have made it difficult for them.
The fact that Maguire, who was one of the first names on Manchester United’s team sheet for a period of time, is now probably the fourth choice shows that his defensive depth has improved.
If the injury problems continue to occur then it could be a concern, but for now you would like to think that Manchester United have been unlucky.
