Former FIFA, UEFA and Premier League referee Keith Hackett has questioned the consistency of Premier League referees in awarding penalties.
This came after Chelsea were awarded a controversial penalty in a 1–1 draw against United after Scott McTominay was deemed to have brought down Armando Broja inside the box.
Jorginho sent the ball from the ensuing penalty spot to give the Blues the lead before a late equalizer from Casemiro ensured the Red Devils took a share of the points.
Bruno Fernandes after the game questioned why his team was banned after several other teams in the league went unpunished for the same thing.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider on the matter, Hackett agreed with Stuart Attwell’s verdict that McTominay had illegally prevented Broja.
However, Hackett admitted that the inconsistency problem was hurting United along with other teams and he too was puzzled by the matter.
He said, “I think it’s [Fernandes] right in terms of referees’ inconsistency in retaining fouls. What we have seen this week, and I wonder if anyone has whispered in the referees’ ears, is more of a penalty kick given for a holding offence.
“No one has questioned the consistency in the retention of infractions in the prison [area] more than me. She is absolutely right, there has been an underlying inconsistency in this.”
“Watch this space because I think someone has whispered in the umpires’ ears to say ‘Look, we want to toughen up.’ That could be the new manager of the select group one, Jon Moss.
The Chelsea game represented only the last game in which the Red Devils were almost ruled out by the referee.
Against Newcastle, Craig Pawson was extremely controversial in his decision-making and seemed to be relegated to refereeing in the second tier of English football as a result.

The same thing happened against Everton when what looked like a perfect Marcus Rashford goal was scored in unclear circumstances.
Hopefully the situation changes and United finally start to get a fair deal.
