Manchester United have not made any contact with Michael Edwards as he currently stands.
This is according to Tom Gott and Graeme Bailey of 90 min, who say there is no concrete interest from the Red Devils for the former Liverpool manager.
“When contacted by 90min, United sources were quick to deny the speculation. [that they had made contact with Edwards].
“United has denied speaking to Edwards, who insists he won’t take up a new role until next year.”
A report emerged yesterday that United had contacted Edwards in an effort to lure him to Old Trafford ahead of Chelsea, who are also interested in him.
According to yesterday’s report, United had made Edwards a great offer and was even willing to wait until next summer for him to join.
Edwards has taken a sabbatical from any football-related activities following his departure from Anfield earlier this year.
Gott and Bailey say the transfer guru has told Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly that he’s not ready to return to work anytime soon.
Boehly appears to have been undeterred by this and is currently working on a deal structure that would see Edwards move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023.
The 43-year-old would become part of Chelsea’s new and revamped recruiting department that has been taking shape since Boehly took over the reins in London.
Boehly has overseen a major overhaul at Chelsea, including the appointment of Monaco manager Laurence Stewart, with Christopher Vivell not far behind. The Blues are also on the trail of Brighton scouting chief Paul Winstanley.
United must be alert to Edwards’ situation and make sure they are willing to sign him when he returns to action. His CV says a lot. He is responsible for Liverpool’s acquisitions of Virgil van Dijk and Brazilian goalkeeper Allison. He also engineered Philippe Coutinho’s mega money sale to Barcelona.
