Robertson says Nunez ‘really angry’ over what happened in 44th minute of Ajax win: ‘Don’t know if he understood a word I said’

Darwin Nunez was understandably furious at the halftime break after blowing a clear opportunity from close range.

Andy Robertson shared how his Uruguayan teammate felt before the second half and his words of encouragement before the striker doubled the lead in the opening stages of 45 seconds.

“Darwin was at halftime really mad at himself, disappointed in himself for missing out on that opportunity,” the Scotland international told Des Kelly after the match (via BT Sport).

“I sat next to him in the locker room, I don’t know if he understood a word I said, but I told him: ‘I’ll put a cross on your head and marks, no problem!

“Maybe we should say that more often, but obviously when he got the second goal, obviously a two-goal cushion is always dangerous, but it’s also always nice and then we follow it. Fantastic goal from Harv [Elliott].”

The 23-year-old recorded his fourth goal in as many starts with a superb header (from a left-back cross) to mark an excellent run of late.

Inevitably, comparisons will be made to Erling Haaland and the Nordic goal machine’s frankly ridiculous contributions to his team thus far.

Such weighting of the two makes no sense as far as we are concerned given that we are looking at a player who is clearly not yet the finished article (not forgetting the damaging impact of a three-game suspension after his header on Joachim Andersen either). .

It’s great that Peñarol’s former hit man holds himself up to impeccably high standards and makes up for mistakes with notable contributions of his own where it matters.

The jury may be out on Nunez when it comes to Damien Delaney, but we’re increasingly convinced on our end that we’ve got the real deal in the former Benfica star.
