Manchester United close to agreeing deal with ex-Liverpool transfer chief Michael Edwards – Man United News And Transfer News

There were high expectations for Erik ten Hag when he was first announced as Manchester United’s new manager. And after 11 games, it seems that the board made the right decision to appoint the Dutch boss.

After last year’s disappointing sixth place, it was imperative that United get off to a good start, but they didn’t. They lost their first two games but have since lost just one in eight as they are just one point off fourth place.

Liverpool’s transfer specialist close to signing for United

Ten Hag’s philosophy is also starting to take shape and the players seem to adapt to his methods as United have been dominant in their last two games against the top four.

Ten Hag deserves credit for signing United in the summer, as new players such as Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Antony have proven to be revelations.

United’s defense looks much better with the Butcher, while Casemiro has started to dominate games from midfield. Eriksen’s cunning and Antony’s ruthlessness up front are proving to be game changers for the Red Devils.

And now United are set to drastically improve their transfer recruiting department as they are in talks with former Liverpool transfer guru Michael Edwards.

As Football Insider exclusively revealed, “United are close to reaching a deal with the 43-year-old and are willing to wait until next summer for him to join.”

Transfer coup for United

The former Liverpool recruiting chief is currently on sabbatical after leaving his job at Liverpool last year.

Chelsea were also interested at one point, but Edwards was reluctant to end his sabbatical so soon and now the Blues appear to be looking elsewhere for their new Director of Football.

The 20-time English champions “have decided that Edwards is the right man to oversee their transfer business after so many costly mistakes in the past and have presented him with what they believe to be a very attractive offer.”

Edwards joined Liverpool from Tottenham to take over as chief analyst in 201 before taking over as sporting director in November 2016.

His Liverpool resume speaks volumes about the work he has done behind the scenes, helping Jurgen Klopp build one of the greatest Liverpool teams ever.

The 43-year-old had a knack for finding hidden gems in the transfer market, as Liverpool acquired relatively low-priced gems like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Diogo Jota.

Edwards CV says a lot

Even for his big money purchases, Edwards always made sure to find the right player for the right role and it’s fair to say the players have more than made up for his high prices.

Case in point are the acquisitions of defender Virgil van Dijk for £75m and goalkeeper Alisson Becker for £67m.

Aside from the buying aspect, Edwards is also a master when it comes to receiving the best possible price for players when they sell. The sale of Philippe Coutinho for 142 million pounds says it all.

If United can get Edwards as their sporting director, it would be seen as a huge coup and would definitely enhance United’s transfer market attraction even further. Not to mention the anger of Liverpool fans who won’t like their former hero accepting the offer.

Ten Hag needs all the help he can get as he looks to guide United back to the top of English football.
