Wrexham ban Paul Mullin boots because of political message

Wrexham AFC banned specific boots worn by star striker Paul Mullin. The 27-year-old striker unveiled the custom shoes on Monday. The all-black Nike boots featured a slogan harshly criticizing the Conservative Party in the UK.

The Welsh outfit have previously stepped into the spotlight thanks to new ownership by actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. Wrexham currently competes in the National League, the fifth tier in England’s system.

“The Club can confirm that the boots revealed by Paul Mullin on social media will not be worn tonight or at any other Wrexham AFC fixture,” an official statement read. “The photographs taken at the Racecourse Ground were made without our knowledge or approval.”

“For the record, the photographs would not have been allowed to be taken, had we known, and the Club will deal with the matter privately.”

“The Club has taken a neutral position on many issues with a political dimension and intends to continue to do so in the future.”

“The Club also recognizes that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, whether they are employees or supporters, but also stresses that an individual opinion cannot be fairly attributed, such as the opinion of everyone or the Club itself.”

Mullin already has 11 goals in just 14 National League games for the Welsh club this season. The striker also led the league with 26 goals during the 2021/22 campaign. He earned the National League Player of the Year award last season. That came in his freshman campaign with the club.

Undoubtedly the biggest signing during new ownership, Mullin joined the Cambridge United Dragons in 2021. There is no indication of a suspension for Pullin due to the post. The club’s official statement also said that the star will remain an integral part of the team. Wrexham will next play Halifax Town on Tuesday.
