Spanish giants Atletico Madrid recorded a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Betis in their last game in La Liga.
French striker Antoine Griezmann scored a brilliant brace for the visiting team, while Nabil Fekir scored a goal for Real Betis.
Atlético de Madrid came into the game with a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano. Diego Simeone’s team wanted to return to winning ways. They were facing a Real Betis team that has played brilliant football throughout the season.
Simeone displayed a 4-4-2. Jan Oblack started under goal. Nahuel Molina, Stefan Savic, José María Giménez and Reinildo completed the back four. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Axel Witsel started at the base of midfield. Saúl Ñíguez and Ángel Correa started as midfielders. Álvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann formed the two-man forward.
Atlético de Madrid beat Real Betis
Real Betis at home had a better start to the match. They did not let Atlético de Madrid fire a single shot on goal in the first half.
However, Pellegirini’s team also failed to create much on their own. The first half ended with a score of 0-0. Then, shortly after the restart, Real Betis winger Luiz Henrique found the back of the net. His goal, however, was disallowed by VAR for offside.
Atlético de Madrid was then very close to opening the scoring when Ángel Correa fired a powerful shot. But the Betis substitute, Víctor Luiz, blocked the shot and a sure goal.
Atleti, however, did not have to wait long for the goal. After Luiz’s block, Atleti received a corner. Antoine Grizzmann then stepped forward and scored an Olympic goal to give Atlético Madrid the lead.
After scoring the goal, Atleti looked much more composed and were now creating decent chances. Finally, in the 71st minute, Matheus Cunha found Griezmann in a very good position. The Frenchman scored his second goal of the match to give Atletico Madrid a two-goal lead.
Nabil Fekir pulled one back for the hosts with a perfectly placed free kick into the top right corner. Betis then recovered to get the equalizer. They were very close through Aitor Ruibal who wasted a golden opportunity. Shortly after, Alex Moreno missed the opportunity and the game ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of Atlético de Madrid.
After this victory, Atlético de Madrid is currently in third position in the LaLiga table. They now have twenty-three points from the first eleven games. Atlético de Madrid will face Bayer Leverkusen in their next match.
For its part, Real Betis is now in fifth position with twenty points in eleven games. Betis will face Ludogorates Razgrad in their next match.
