English Premier League giants Liverpool have reportedly initiated contact with Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who currently plays for Catalan giants FC Barcelona.
After spending time in the ASV Arkel and RKC academy, Frenkie de Jong joined the Willem II youth setup at a very young age.
De Jong then graduated from the Willem II setup and was promoted to the main squad. But soon after, the midfielder joined Dutch giants Ajax. He initially played for Ajax’s reserve team. But in the following years, Frenkie established himself as one of the pillars of Ajax.
The midfielder got his breakthrough in the 2018-19 season. He played a pivotal role in Ajax’s first UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance in 22 years. In the same season, Frenkie de Jong was voted the Eredivisie Most Valuable Player. Following this, he was signed by Catalan giants FC Barcelona for a reported fee of €75m.
Barcelona midfielder on Liverpool’s transfer list
Frenkie de Jong had a decent start to his career at Barcelona. However, he failed to reach the heights that the Catalans expected of him. Meanwhile, Barcelona was also going through financial problems. So the Catalan giants decided to sell Frenkie de Jong last summer, who is one of the top earners in the squad.
They even agreed a transfer fee with Manchester United of the English Premier League. But De Jong stuck to his stance. He had no intention of leaving the club of his dreams and stayed at the Camp Nou.
He continues to be a key piece in Xavi’s team. But the Dutch midfielder is not seeing as much playing time as he would have hoped. It has been understood that seeing this situation, he is open to a move in the next transfer window.
Now, according to ESPN, the EPL Liverpool team has contacted Frenkie de Jong’s camp. The Reds are going through a midfield crisis this season. This is one of the reasons for their fall in the English Premier League.
They signed Brazilian midfielder Arthur on the last day of the transfer window, but the loan from Juventus has so far failed to impress the German. So Klopp has asked Liverpool to find another midfielder in the next transfer window.
Despite not playing at his best, Frenkie de Jong is one of the best midfielders in his position. He can help Liverpool gain some control in midfield. Hence, they seek to sign him.
Now it is not the only EPL club looking to sign De Jong. Chelsea and Manchester United have a huge interest in the Dutch international. So if Liverpool want to sign the Barcelona midfielder, they will have to move fast.
Meanwhile, Frenkie took part in Barcelona’s 4-0 win against Athletic Bilbao yesterday. Little by little he has been acquiring a more important role in the season. So it will be interesting to see if Barcelona finally sells him.
