Lisandro Martinez has revealed his Manchester United idol during an interview with Sky Sports News.
During the interview, Martínez revealed his admiration for a fellow Argentine:
“Gabriel Heinze is my idol.
“I love it. I love how he played, very aggressive, good mentality, good mentality in duels. Every match like a final. He was a top player”.
The ‘grinta’ that Erik ten Hag has given Martinez credit for could also apply to Heinze and perhaps there is more than a little inspiration at play there.
Heinze was Manchester United’s Player of the Year in 2005 and Martinez could be on his way to becoming the second Argentine to do so.
Before his dalliances with Liverpool, the former United defender had an attitude that endeared him to fans, and it’s an attitude shared by the £57m signing.
“I like his mentality,” Martinez said.
He too knows this first hand, having spoken with Gabriel Heinze before he moved from Amsterdam.
“We just talk about football and life,” he said.
If Heinze offered any advice on settling in at Old Trafford, it certainly seems to be paying off.
Martinez has forged an incredible partnership with Raphael Varane and appears to be justifying his price tag in the early stages of his United career.
However, his dreams go beyond those early stages:
“Our ambition is to win titles, to put Manchester United where they deserve.
“I think we are in a good way to do it. But we have to keep our feet on the ground, we have to be humble and do it step by step.” United Matchday Magazine – The Ultimate Match Experience Take your seat for the Chelsea match and stay on top of all things United!
