Declan Rice seemed to pay tribute to the return of Joe Gomez after telling the center half “Joe, see you soon, yeah” in the tunnel after the Reds’ 1-0 win.
Perhaps it is simply two fellow England internationals saying goodbye, although one can’t help but wonder if the midfielder has any suspicions that Gareth Southgate will call the No. 2 to his side for the World Cup.
He is certainly likely to feature in the Three Lions boss’s provisional 55-man squad before he is whittled down to the final 26-man selection for Qatar.
If Gomez can keep things going week in and week out, the former Middlesbrough manager will find it increasingly difficult to overlook a man he personally holds dear.
