Arsenal qualify for Europa knockout stage with narrow PSV win

Arsenal advanced to the knockout stage of the Europa League after beating PSV Eindhoven 1-0 on Thursday. Arsenal still have two group stage games remaining in the competition.

The Gunners dominated PSV in most areas. However, Granit Xhaka’s sweet goal in the 70th minute was the only goal of the match. It leaves the Gunners five points behind the visitors in Group A.

The north London club can secure top spot in the group with just a draw against PSV on October 27. Even a loss against the Dutch giants in a week does not necessarily give PSV the advantage at the top of the table. Arsenal would have to lose their last two games remaining in the group for PSV to have a chance at top spot. The Gunners finish their group stage games at home to bottom-placed FC Zurich in November.

Arsenal reach the knockout stages of the Europa League

Although Arsenal won the match on Thursday, they only managed to score a goal for the third game in a row. His normally powerful attack has sizzled a bit in the last few weeks. In fact, the Gunners have scored at least two goals in nine of their first 10 total games at the start of the current campaign.

However, the team’s defense has stepped up when necessary. PSV’s match was the third consecutive game in which the rivals did not score. The goalkeeper of the United States men’s team once again starred between the sticks of coach Mikel Arteta.

Turner has amassed three clean sheets in four games for his new club. The only goal the goalkeeper has allowed came in his first game with the team in early September.

Arsenal have not lost a competitive home game since April. This is a streak of 10 wins in a row at the Emirates Stadium. During this stretch, the Gunners have outscored their opponents 30 to 10.

The current Premier League leaders travel to Southampton on Sunday, ahead of the aforementioned PSV match in a week.
