FC Barcelona coach Xavi has admitted that he would understand if the Catalan team decided to fire him, as they are on the verge of elimination from the Champions League.
Barcelona sit third in Champions League Group C with just four points from four matches. Bayern Munich leads the group with 12 points and Inter Milan is second with seven points.
If Inter Milan achieve a victory in either of the two remaining group stage games, Barcelona would be eliminated in the group stage. That would be a humiliation for Barcelona after a summer in which they reinforced their squad.
They also succumbed to a 3-1 loss to fierce rivals Real Madrid in their previous La Liga game. The result also saw Barcelona fall to second place in the league points table.
Xavi would understand that Barcelona fired him
Xavi admitted that he would understand if Barcelona fired him. “Of course. It’s football. People on the street raise their fists at me in encouragement.
“Now we have to continue and face reality, but I’m always positive. With the effort made by the club and the squad we have, we have to compete for titles”, said Xavi.
The Barcelona manager also admitted that there will be consequences if things don’t change for the club. However, he also promised to turn things around.
“And if we don’t win, as the president says [Joan Laporta] That said, there will be consequences, starting with me. If we don’t win, another coach will come in. But I’m going to give everything to make this work.”
Meanwhile, the loss to Real Madrid was Barcelona’s first in La Liga this season. They had been undefeated until they collided with their arch-rivals.
Barça had arrived at the match against Real Madrid as the spearhead. With 22 points, both Barça and Real Madrid were level on points. But Barcelona occupied the first position thanks to a superior goal difference.
But the result in the Clásico saw Real Madrid jump to the top of the league. Real Madrid now enjoy a three-point lead over Xavi’s men.
Barcelona host Villarreal at the Camp Nou in their next game as they look to get back on the winning track. Then they will host Athletic Club in their next match. The Spanish giants will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
