Forgotten Liverpool man now ‘cranking up training’ in anticipation of ‘crunch period’ – James Pearce

Liverpool’s momentous 1-0 victory over Manchester City will have been somewhat overshadowed by news of Diogo Jota’s long-term injury.

It’s such a serious injury that Jurgen Klopp refused to put a timetable on it, though the harsh reality of this development is that it creates opportunities for others to shine in his place.

Fabio Carvalho should be the man to seize his chance with both hands, although the club will no doubt consider starting Curtis Jones in the left midfield role as well, a position he has previously thrived in, and returning star, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“Another player on the way back for Liverpool is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been gradually increasing the intensity of his training at Kirkby after three months out with a torn hamstring,” James Pearce wrote for TheAthletic. “Klopp has used it on both flanks before.”

It’s a huge loss for us, although there is an element of fortune in that our biggest games before the World Cup are meetings with Napoli at Anfield and a visit to north London, where we will face Tottenham.

That’s not to rule out our other challenges, of course, and this Liverpool side will need to show they are capable of showing consistency after a potentially season-defining win over increasingly bitter rivals Manchester City.

The mantra from the inside has always been that we will look to give an inside man a chance before looking to the market and while we are deeply disappointed to see Jota injured once again, we are excited to see who will take his place.
