Premier League plans U.S. preseason tournament in 2023

The Premier League plans to organize a new pre-season tournament in the United States next summer. The Athletic reports that England’s top flight will finally be able to host a competition in America after years of planning.

Premier League officials have reportedly wanted to bring meaningful matches to certain US markets for years. The COVID-19 pandemic previously derailed these plans. While organizers initially expressed interest in playing regular-season games across the pond, it appears a preseason tournament will have to suffice.

Although not yet fully developed, the earlier report mentioned suggests the tournament could feature six Premier League clubs. This format would consist of three teams in two separate groups. The clubs would then face other teams within their group in a round robin format.

This tournament would take place in several cities of the country. Ticket sales for these potential games certainly wouldn’t be a problem and most games are likely to sell out.

There would also be a lot of interest in sponsorships and broadcast rights. Estimates on the league’s potential earnings are still unclear. However, expect big revenue for the Premier League.

The timing of the tournament could also be perfect. Currently, there is no major international tournament during the summer of 2023. FIFA scheduled the 2022 World Cup for the winter. Also, UEFA and CONMEBOL now have the same schedule for the European Championship and the Copa América. Those tournaments will take place in 2024. Therefore, the organizers hope that these games will feature the best players from each club.

As of now, 14 of the 20 Premier League clubs have expressed interest in the tournament. It is currently unclear which teams have inquired. However, the organizers certainly expect the ‘Big Six’ teams to play. Those traditional teams are Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham.

However, there is apparent optimism in getting at least one of these big clubs into the tournament. If it were fully organized, the preseason competition would likely occur in late July.
