Chelsea interested in Jonathan David

English Premier League giants Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Canadian international Jonathan David in the upcoming January transfer window.

After spending time at various academies in Ottawa, Jonathan David joined Belgian club Gent in the year of 2018.

The Canadian striker soon cemented his place in Gent’s starting eleven and began to produce consistent performances. David then received a call up to the national team and was soon representing Canada on the international stage. The forward was awarded the Canadian Men’s Player of the Year in 2019.

Finally, in the January 2020 transfer window, the Canadian international was signed by Ligue 1 club Lille for a fee of €30 million, making him the most expensive Canadian player. In his debut season with the club, David helped Lille win the Ligue 1 title and end PSG’s dominance. The striker then won the Trophee des Champions title in 2021.

Chelsea want to sign Jonathan David

Chelsea interested in Jonathan David

According to a report by Sport Witness, English Premier League giants Chelsea are looking to sign Lille striker Jonathan David in the next transfer window.

After Thomas Tuchel was sacked, Chelsea brought in Graham Potter from Brighton to replace the German. Since then, Chelsea have done well under their new manager.

One of the main reasons for this has been the excellent form of Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who joined the London club in the last transfer window of the summer.

But Aubameyang, 33, is unlikely to stay at the club for long. In light of this, Chelsea manager Graham Potter has called for a new striker who can give Aubameyang some serious competition and replace him at the right time.

From there began his interest in Jonathan David. The Lille striker is currently in great form. He has already scored nine goals in Ligue 1 this season and is in the running for the golden boot.

He is also currently Lille’s top scorer in the 20th century. Naturally, Lille considers him one of his team’s greatest assets. Besides Chelsea, many other teams are monitoring him.

So if Chelsea want to secure the striker, the Blues will have to pay at least £50m to the Ligue 1 side.

Jonathan David will be part of the Canada team at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar 2022. David, who has already scored 24 goals in 32 appearances, is a sure starter for the Canadian team.

His progress in the tournament will largely depend on the striker. And any great performance in this perennial event will make the price of him even higher.

Chelsea will face Brentford in their next game.
