Former Liverpool flop Simon Mignolet’s resurgence has impressed Erik ten Hag – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United were unable to continue their three-game winning streak as Newcastle United managed a goalless draw at Old Trafford.

The hosts fended off two brilliant chances late in the game to secure all three points. Fred and Marcus Rashford were to blame, but Erik ten Hag had revealed that he was happy with his team’s overall performance despite the setback.

The match was a historic occasion for David de Gea, who made his 500th appearance in United colours. He was awarded a plaque commemorating the occasion by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

De Gea kept his 170th clean sheet of his United career, but he remains a risk when it comes to passing out from behind and coming off his line to stifle opposition attacks.

And that has meant United have yet to start the one-year extension clause in his contract, which is due to expire next year. His form, coupled with his huge salary, means that Ten Hag wants to take some time before making a decision.

Quite a few alternatives have been mentioned in case the Spanish ends up leaving. Jan Oblak remains one of the favourites, while Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa has become a new target.

Surprising names like Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez have also been named in various reports.

A surprising new contender has been singled out as a possible option for the Red Devils. According to Het Laaste Nieuws (via HITC), “Manchester United attempted to sign Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet during the summer transfer window.”

Mignolet emerges as a surprising choice

Ever since Jurgen Klopp sold him for just £6m, the former Liverpool goalkeeper has been a revelation on home soil, playing for Club Brugge.

The Belgium international kept his fourth successive Champions League clean sheet after the Belgian side held out a 0-0 draw with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. They are currently the first of their group.

“What Simon Mignolet showed today is fantastic,” Club Brugge CEO Vincent Mannaert told VTM after the match. “Right now, Mignolet is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”

According to HLN, “Club Brugge resisted Manchester United’s attempts to bring Mignolet back to the North West last summer with Erik ten Hag in the market for an experienced substitute for David de Gea.”

They also revealed that there is a high possibility that United will revisit their interest next summer with Martin Dubravka likely returning to Newcastle after the conclusion of his loan spell and the uncertainty surrounding Dean Henderson’s future.

Not only the Red Devils but also Ajax called with Brugge tying Mignolet to a new contract that runs until 2026.
