Manchester United drew goalless against Newcastle United this afternoon at Old Trafford. Here are our player ratings for the game:
(A score of 6 is about average.)
David de Gea 5.5 – He kept a clean sheet, something must count. But what was that hospital pass for Fred early in the second half?
Diogo Dalot 7.5 – Solid performance at the rear. I could have advanced further.
Raphael Varane 5 – It was a bit clumsy for the first half penalty appeal and the tug of the shirt. He sprayed some wasteful long balls forward.
Lisandro Martinez 6 – He did well against Callum Wilson, but he seems to have played too many games.
Luke Shaw 6 – Seemed to get stuck in no man’s land a couple of times, inviting the rest of the defense to pressure.
Casemiro 5 – He seemed a bit slow to react at times, obsessed with the ball.
Fred 3.5 – Pretty slow, pretty short, limited passing ability, limited tackling ability, doesn’t score goals… What does he do?
Antony 7 – Predictable at times, pushing the ball too hard and slowing down what could have been good counter-attacking opportunities. He had a couple of good runs but little end product. He got better as the match went on.
Bruno Fernandes 4.5 – Didn’t really produce much. At least he wasn’t as wasteful as usual.
Jadon Sancho 7 – Had a couple of good runs early on, but seemed bereft of any idea players around him.
Cristiano Ronaldo 3 – He did not achieve anything. Always one meter from the rhythm. He wasn’t happy about being substituted, which tells you he really doesn’t see how bad it was.

Marcus Rashford 7: He seemed like a much better option than Ronaldo, he should have joined sooner. What a chance at the end.
