Liverpool release statement condemning ‘vile chants’ from Manchester City fans

It goes without saying that any teasing of disasters that affects not only those directly damaged by a disaster, but also millions of fans who continue to honor the lost and affected, should be off limits when it comes to “jokes of fanatics.”

However, Liverpool Football Club was forced to issue a statement condemning the actions of several away fans during Manchester City’s clash with the Reds at Anfield.

“We are deeply disappointed to hear vile chanting related to the football stadium tragedies from the away section during today’s match at Anfield. The concourse in the visitors’ section was also vandalized with graffiti of a similar nature.

“We know the impact that behavior has on families, survivors and all those associated with such disasters.

“We are working with the relevant authorities and will also work with Manchester City to do everything we can to ensure that these chants are completely eradicated from football.”

We would like to hope that the Sky Blues and Pep Guardiola take this matter very seriously and seek to ban everyone involved.

We are deeply saddened to hear such behavior at a football game.

Despite repeatedly expressing concern about Hillsborough’s continued use of slurs, it seems the message isn’t getting through to a handful of supporters.

While we can appreciate that it can be difficult to get everyone involved together, those who the evidence specifically points to should not receive match bans from their team stadiums.

Whether a more severe punishment should involve the police or contact with the families affected by the tragedy, and others, is up for debate, but the club simply cannot afford to offer just a slap on the wrist for such despicable behaviour.
