Newcastle boss Eddie Howe responds to Cristiano Ronaldo to Newcastle suggestion

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has responded to a suggestion that Newcastle could come in for Cristiano Ronaldo.

With Saudi Arabia’s acquisition of Newcastle last year, they could be one of the few teams that could afford Ronaldo’s likely astronomical salaries.

Spending a significant fee on signing Ronaldo would not be a smart move for any club, considering his age, and this is a key reason Howe believes he would not be a move Newcastle would opt for.

“We need to lower the average age, so it might not be a signing [Ronaldo] which we would necessarily look to do, but without underestimating the quality of the player,” Howe said, as reported by The Mirror.

Nobody can doubt Ronaldo’s quality, but his ability has certainly diminished in the last 12 months. At 37, the monumental investment it would take to bring him to the club is probably not worth it.

The business aspect of the deal would of course be an attraction for Newcastle, but looking at their recent signing he has largely focused on improving the team for the future rather than a business move.

After a disappointing start to the season, it’s hard to see Ronaldo playing in a higher league when his contract at Manchester United expires next summer.
