Barcelona join the race for Alphonso Davies

After spending some time in the Edmonton Strikers academy, Davies joined the Vancouver Whitecaps FC youth setup. He finished his football education in Vancouver and was soon promoted to the main team.

Within days, Davies cemented his place in the starting eleven. He became the first player born in the 2000s to play in Major League Soccer. Davies played with great consistency even at a very young age and was rewarded with a call-up to the national team. In 2017 he became the youngest player to represent Canada in international soccer.

Davies was then signed by Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the summer of 2018 for a fee of $22 million (bonus included). Davies gradually worked his way into the Bayern squad and won the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award in the 2019-20 season. In the same season, he helped Bayern win the Sextuple and was considered one of the best full-backs in the world.

Barcelona joins the race for Alphonso Davies

According to a recent report by Sport, Catalan Giants FC Barcelona intends to sign Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies from Bundesliga side Bayern Munich.

Now, Barcelona is currently in a transition phase. They spent a lot of money in the last transfer window. Players like Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Hector Belletrin, Marcos Alonso and Frank Kessie joined the Catalan Giants.

The summer signings have already started to settle in and Xavi’s team are off to a great start in LaLiga. They have won seven of their first eight matches. With twenty-two points, Barcelona is currently at the top of the table.

However, Laporta knows that Barcelona still need more signings to reach their glory days. This is evident from his performance in Europe. The Blaugrana have only registered four points four in the UEFA Champions League. Therefore, Barcelona is looking to sign more players to strengthen its squad.

Now, Barcelona’s left-back position currently has three players. Jordi Alba’s long servant has fallen into disgrace. The club wants to fire him because of his high salary. Summer signing Marcos Alonso is 32 years old and obviously won’t be around for many years.

His only long-term option at left back is Alejandro Balde. Coming from La Masia, the left back has established himself this season. But he is still very young. So Barcelona are looking for players who can compete with him or are an improvement over him.

His interest in Alphonso Davies is longstanding. Barcelona earlier had the opportunity to sign him from the Canadian club. However, they failed to do so.

Whats Next?

Now it seems that once again they have rekindled their interest. However, signing him will not be easy. Davies has a long contract with Bayern that will end in 2025.

He is currently one of the best left backs in the world. His rivals, Real Madrid, are also following the Canadian. Therefore, a transfer deal for the young left back will be a very difficult job for Barcelona.
