Merson expects two Liverpool stars to ‘struggle’ against Manchester City

Paul Merson believes that two Liverpool defenders will find it difficult when Manchester City visit Anfield on Sunday.

The Premier League champions travel to Merseyside with the chance of being 16 points clear of the Reds, even though they have played one more game than Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The Reds earned three much-needed Champions League points when they defeated Rangers on Wednesday night, but Merson tipped the Sky Blues to earn a 3-1 victory at the weekend.

“Joe Gomez was also all over the place at full-back against Arsenal, and can see nothing but a fight against Foden and Grealish this weekend,” he told Sportskeeda.

“Erling Haaland will face Virgil van Dijk this weekend, and I think the latter will find it a bit difficult to face the top scorer in the Premier League. This will be an interesting challenge for both players.

“Liverpool have been so spoiled for brilliance over the years that a couple of out-of-form players have caused chaos. from yesterday [Wednesday’s 7-1 defeat of Rangers] The result will make the difference for Liverpool, and Mohamed Salah will be a completely different player this weekend.

“Do I see Liverpool winning? No. They keep letting in too many goals. Manchester City have Haaland and he will continue to win a lot of games this season. I don’t see how Liverpool are going to prevent me from scoring at least two goals this weekend.”

Bobby Firmino is in top form at the moment, Mo Salah scored a hat-trick off the bench and Diogo Jota also made a big impact as a substitute at Ibrox, so the hope is that Klopp’s men will take Wednesday’s result to the clash with city

However, the Citizens will pose a much more serious threat compared to the Glasgow-based side, and keeping Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland quiet won’t be easy.

We believe that the criticism of Joe Gómez is quite harsh.

Our No. 2 replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold at Emirates and finished the game solidly and then recorded a sublime assist for Firmino against Rangers.

Naturally, he’s a centre-back, but his strength and pace mean he can certainly do a job at right-back.

Ibrahima Konate also had quality against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side and if he can team up with Virgil van Dijk, it won’t be long until we find ourselves further up the Premier League table.
