Chelsea Was Unable to Unlock Timo Werner According to Thierry Henry

Former Chelsea player Timo Werner had a tough time while playing in the English Premier League.

But his time at Chelsea ended when Chelsea sold him to his former club RB Leipzig this summer for a reported fee of £25m.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry shared his thoughts on why Werner was unsuccessful at Stamford Bridge.

In Henry’s opinion, the striker did not “feel the love” while playing with Tuchel or Lampard.

The Bundesliga star arrived on a £47.5m deal as Chelsea decided to activate his release clause. The German had a remarkable season, as he scored 34 goals in 45 games in 2019-20 with Leipzig. But his numbers fell short of his Bundesliga records while he played for two seasons at Chelsea.

After returning to Germany this season, Werner has scored seven goals in 13 appearances. These numbers have led Henry to believe that the striker is regaining his form and confidence in front of goal.

While playing against Celtic, Werner scored in the 75th minute for his club in the Champions League game. The game ended in a 2-0 win for Leipzig after Emil Forsberg added his name to the scoresheet.

While discussing this on CBS Sports, Henry pointed to Werner’s performance. He thinks that Werner feels loved after returning to his homeland. His confidence to play the full 90 minutes has helped him regain his confidence.

The former Premier League striker also pointed out the difference between the Chelsea version and the Leipzig version of Werner.

And he added: “The best example is the second goal. First of all, at the first check, Timo Werner would never have put that ball on Chelsea, and then he would never have seen [Emil] Forsberg. She would have rushed trying to do something, overthinking it and overdoing it.”

The Arsenal legend praised Werner for regaining the calm that every striker needs to maintain his goal tally. She also recounted Werner’s situation at Chelsea. He described: “Sometimes you go to some places, they don’t show you that love.”

Werner scored and assisted for Leipzig in the Glasgow game. Now, his club has risen to second place in the Group F table.

During his first season at Chelsea, the German striker registered 12 goals and 15 assists in 52 games. In the final season, his number reached a new low with 11 goals and six assists in 37 appearances. But he helped his club win three major trophies including the 2020-21 season Champions League.
